Zenobia July

zenobia july book coverby Lisa Bunker // Reviewed September 1, 2019

This story introduces us to Zenobia, who just moved to a small town in Maine and is living as a girl for the first time. Supported by her two aunts and new friends at the "orphans and misfits" table in the lunchroom, Zen explores not only looking and dressing like a girl, but also making friends and navigating social situations as one. When someone starts hacking the school website to publish malicious hate messages, Zen uses her super-computer skills to track down the perpetrator. While her computer skills seem a bit far-fetched and the cyber crime is tied up way too nicely and easily, this book is a nuanced look at gender identity for both someone struggling with gender questions themselves or someone seeking to understand what issues a trans person might face in middle school.
