Mystery Genre Study Celebration!

We have been working sooo hard lately in our mystery book clubs. All the kiddos have done such an awesome job discussing their suspects, keeping track of clues, and trying desperately to crack the case before Encyclopedia Brown, Cam Jansen or Meg Mackintosh. To celebrate the end of the mystery study - and to ward off complaints about next month's non-fiction study... - we had a real-live class mystery!

I got most of the idea from Education World, actually. They have so many free lessons, and I was searching for one that my kids could really get into. I staged a class mystery: Who took the jar from off my desk? We talked about how to solve the mystery - It was great to hear them using all their mystery vocabulary words so seriously! They wanted to find witnesses, and antagonize suspects, but eventually we got around to sweeping for fingerprints. Each student had to give me their fingerprints, using pencil lead and clear tape, and identify what sort of fingerprints they had. After collecting their prints, I examined them (carefully and scientifically, of course) and announced what type of fingerprints were found on the miraculously recovered jar. They had so much fun trying to figure out who the culprit was!

You can grab the fingerprinting record sheet and fingerprint reference (based on what I found on FBI Kids) for free at my TpT store.

Have a great one! :)
